Summary
Sixteen years in community leadership. Played key roles in planning, leading and team building for youth programs including discos, youth groups, national conventions and one-one mentoring. Change management, with broad experience in organizational and cultural visioning and design, team development, personal coaching and counselling, public speaking and education.
Children and Youth
Develop high rapport with children and youth in contexts ranging from church Sunday Schools to youth discos and school events. Work with young leaders to develop and deliver projects from dream stage to completion. Trained by Teen Challenge in suicide prevention and have worked in a number of situations with individual youths at risk. Run formal life and faith development programs utilising multimedia and popular culture as a means of raising questions and seeking answers that are relevant and useful.
Organizational Leader and Team Player
Implemented visioning and values clarification processes for community of 100+ people. Provided key leadership for large leadership team of 20+ and transitioned that team into a competent and more agile team of eight leaders. Provided oversight for a community as it restructured from a highly program based profile with high dependence on paid staff to a more flexible, internally motivated and healthy community that responds to local needs with passion and purpose with a clear sense of boundaries. Ongoing interest in strategic future planning. Current board member of Council for Christian Education in Schools during major structural change and re-visioning. Worked successfully in a number of small staff teams. From January 2008 will be Mission and Education consultant to over 90 Uniting Church congregations, schools and agencies throughout the south-east region of Melbourne.
Coaching and Couselling
Worked with individuals of a variety of ages (children to seniors) helping them cope with daily life issues and crises, to working on their own sense of purpose and direction in life. Includes conflict resolution and values clarification, enhancing listening skills, and use of the “Equilibration technique” to move past resentments and other blockages. Training with Results Coaching Systems is nearing completion and is already being successfully adapted into other areas of my work. Assisted people making decisions about career changes that have led them out of unfulfilling employment paths into more satisfying and sustainable directions. A number of close friends and current work colleagues are in senior management and advanced technical fields. Technical background and listening skills enables rapid development of rapport with executives and researchers.
Public Speaking and Education
Prepare and deliver material several times a week that requires study, reflection on real life integration, different modes of teaching/learning and responsiveness to questions in the course of delivery. Style is confident, informal, interactive and motivational. Training in Public Relations enable clarification and presentation of new ideas and concepts, and use of a range of communications media. Use of available technology and prefer visual aids such as data projectors and the use of movies as a narrative or illustrative tool. Encourages active involvement of listeners through a range of strategies.
