Coaching has been defined as “Facilitating positive change”.

Grab The Future With Both Hands
Is the world melting down?
Today’s newspapers are full of disastrous headlines. The US Senate rejected the bailout plan and stocks are plunging around the world. Australia’s government is receiving Garnaut’s last instalment of actions that need to be taken immediately to avert catastrophic global warming. The Australian Temperament Project report published this week indicates that Gen Y are seriously over-performing in the mental illness stakes. We’ve never had a generation with such high instances of depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses. According to Australian Institute of Families researcher Diana Smart 1 in 5 Aussies in their mid 20’s has a serious mental or physical health problem, with “twice as many suffering depression, anxiety, taking illegal drugs or engage in risky, antisocial behaviour.” (Herald Sun, Sept 24, 2008. One could look at all that bad news and conclude that there is no hope.
You could also look at it another way. Instead of a catastrophe, it could be the ultimate challenge! If you’re in business, this is the time to be at your best. If you’re a parent of a Gen Y or Gen Z child, you’ll need to be brilliant at helping them see the grand possibilities of a world we adults will probably never see. If you’re in the not-for-profit or community support sector, the new world that is emerging will require new responses from you and your organization.
Challenging times can bring out the best and the worst in us. Which would you prefer? Best or worst?
If you chose “Best” then there’s more you should know.
All of this was foreseeable. People have been saying for years that today’s headlines were inevitable. Not because they had some prophetic or magical skills, but simply because the future is more or less predictable. The future only happens as a result of the actions people take (or fail to take). The global economic crisis is the result of certain actions. Those actions arose because we esteemed certain characteristics in senior executives and the corporate culture.
Our children see the world through the eyes of their parents’ values and actions. Australian televisions are currently running a campaign to help parents thinks about what their kids see when they look up to them and see them drinking excessively. It’s not rocket science!
The environment is changing, at least in part because of what we are doing to it. Governments can make policies until they’re blue in the face but the only effective change that will count is when businesses, communities, and the people in them make choices about what they put into the environment. It’s simple, and they don’t need government policies, carbon credits and legislation to do it. It’s a matter of character and choice.
But who’s thinking? Apparently global leaders have trouble with this. So do business leaders and parents. It seems like so much common sense when we stand back and actually think, but when we’re in the midst of daily business, we don’t always ask the questions that need to be asked.
In order to be at one’s best, sometimes it takes an outsider who is “on your side” but who also has a little “clarity of distance”, who can ask great questions and support you in coming up with brilliant answers, so that you can take those amazing and powerful actions that can literally change the world, if not on a global scale, at least on the scale of some one’s life.
A great coach can do this with you. Coaches have the time, skill and insight to ask the questions you’re too busy or too focused to ask for yourself. The best coaches don’t even need to know much about your business, organisation or family. In fact it’s often better that they are not like you and your crowd at all! Why would you want someone to come and charge you an hourly fee, when they’re just as blind to the obvious as you are? It makes more sense to hire a coach who is “ignorant enough” to ask the questions you haven’t bothered or have been too busy to, in order that you find the answers you need to, and make the changes that will be truly transformative, effective and yield great results.
