The first step of the process is to build familiarity in a safe and fun way. Why? Because it reduces the sense of threat experienced by the brain. This is important because the brain’s ability to work insightfully and to make new connections needs a low-threat environment.
The next step is to agree on a common objective and operation goals. This is done at a fairly “high level” like looking down from a helicopter. Sometimes this objective is set from outside the team. Or it can be one which is identified by the team. Either way, it’s the key to what happens next.
The third step of the journey is to describe the current reality. This is important as it gives every member of the team a real sense of where they are starting from. Often assumptions about the present reality can undermine the team’s ability to reach its end objective, so this makes sure the team members are working “from the same page”. This stage also ensures each member feels valued and heard. Members who feel valued often go on to become great contributors to the enterprise, so this stage ensures that they are onboard and ready to make a difference.
Next, the excitement really begins as alternatives are explored, new pathways and solutions chosen and energy built around the actions needed to get there. This step is where the energy to make the journey onward is built, and can generate a huge amount of commitment to the common objective and goals. At an individual level change is already happening as their brains start to create new thought maps and ways of seeing things. These maps and more new ones will be formed and sustained over the rest of the team coaching journey.
It’s time for the team to step out and do things. Each week as the team meets with their coach, they’ll be re[porting in on set actions, learning from their experiences of both accomplishment and failure, gaining valuable insights into themselves individually and as a team, and setting new actions that will have them hitting their targets in no time!
The end of a team coaching series can sometimes be a very sweet & sour experience. Some teams will have formed for a particular task and at the end will be disbanded. Others will have an ongoing life with a new or continuing task. Either way, the end of the series is a time for change and celebration. Celebration of achievements and affirmation of the strengths of the members is a great way to reinforce the learning and the new ways teams have found to work together.
